Character Name: Kurai

Character Series: Angel Sanctuary

Age: Unknown, presumably a couple hundred years old as she looked the same during Alexiel’s rebellion that was prior to hundreds of years of her reincarnations. She looks about 12-13.

Background: Kurai is the 14th princess of Gehenna and the current Dragon Master. Gehenna is the top level of hell. It is too close to Assiah, the human world. Whatever happens to one- happens to the other as well. Kurai was born to rule the demon kingdom. She loved her parents and they adored her back. As she grew older she became mischievous and often got in trouble, angering her father and making him punish her. Kurai believed that her father sent her into exile to third level of hell as a punishment. In reality the Dragons predicted an attack on Gehenna and told the king to save his daughter by sending her away.

Kurai returned to find the whole population of evils slaughtered by angels. She found one alive and tried to give him water, but he was killed by three angels that attempted to rape and kill Kurai right afterward. Alexiel murdered them and asked Kurai if she was able to stand up and hated those that wronged her. She told Kurai to grow stronger because weak only die in this world. That was when three-winged organic angel, Alexiel, announced her rebellion against god.

Alexiel led Kurai to a hiding place where the survivors of the slaughter gathered. She found her cousin, transvestite Arachne, among them. Kurai admired Alexiel and grew stronger to protect her. Alexiel spoke of her opinions of the world. She told Kurai that if "evil", the name humans gave demons, was spelled backwards it would be "live". She strongly believed that a long time ago humans and demons were friends. She also told Kurai that her hands were rough and seemed more like hands of a soldier that those of a woman. Alexiel felt anguish that she had no man by her side to defend her and had to fight instead. Kurai then said that she’d protect Alexiel and marry her when she became strong enough. Alexiel thanked her and expressed her desire to be reincarnated as a man.

The rebellion came to an end under bizarre circumstances. It seemed that Alexiel couldn’t kill her twin brother, Rosiel, and could only seal him away. She was captured by the enemy army and was sentenced to have her soul separated from her body and forced into an endless cycle of reincarnations with painful lives and torturous deaths. Kurai, with the help of Arachne, found the angel crystal in which Alexiel’s body was imprisoned and stole it from heaven. She then started her search for Alexiel’s soul with the "power of love".

Upon seeing an angel in Assiah, Katan, Kurai immediately attacked but he vanished, making the energy ball crush into the window of a chapel, where Setsuna, Sara, and Ruri were. Setsuna protected his sister, Sara, from falling glass while having visions of his past life. His monstrous inability to get hurt saved him and Sara from harm, but it was a different story for Ruri.

Kurai recognized him as the savior, the messiah for demons, because of the power he displayed. Kurai refused to believe that Setsuna was the great Alexiel’s reincarnation as he was male and did not have the “sexy bombshell body”; Setsuna denied any connection to the paranormal world along with being female. The two demons decided to test out their theory and dropped a part of a statue on Setsuna, who luckily escaped. The moment he left, the two demons agreed he wasn’t the one, but the collapsed statue crumbled suddenly. Kurai became convinced that he was the one she was looking for.

Rosiel, who took on Ruri’s form after absorbing her, possessed a thug from Setsuna’s school. The guy kidnapped Sara and made him fight for her. Eventually Setsuna realized that he was battling a monster rather than the usual fights he had with that guy. By then his arm was twisted to the point of being ripped from his body, along with being pierced by for the good measure. Kurai was outraged that Setsuna didn’t awaken his powers and fought back as she was expecting him to. She could tell immediately that Ruri was in reality a high class angel. Suddenly a vision of Adam Kadamon, the highest being after god, appeared. The light of it erased Rosiel’s powers and he was forced to evacuate. Setsuna’s dire wounds were cured as the Adam Kadamon disappeared.

As Alexiel’s reincarnation denied once again that he had any connection to the angel, he told Kurai to return to her country. That statement enraged her since her homeland was destroyed by humans and angels. At that time humans polluted their planet, which affected Gehenna because of their proximity. All angels had to do was swoop into the chaotic land of hell and finish everyone off there. They broke the peace treaty and took advantage of weakened Gehenna.

She accused Alexiel of giving her false hope since Setsuna refused to cooperate. Once again she decided that he could not possibly be her reincarnation as the great angel would never abandon Kurai. He tried to reason with her, to explain that humans live in the present, destroying what is around them for the sake of their own selfish lives. He questioned being reborn as a human if Alexiel waged war on humanity.

Kurai observed Setsuna and noticed that humans let morals and society control their lives, spilling blood for no good reason. In some way they seemed just like what became of demons to her. She asked the Dragons if demons could win without Alexiel’s help. The Dragons predicted Alexiel’s awakening and the destruction of Tokyo as the beginning of final war. Her awakening would also mean Setsuna’s death. This confused Kurai since after a while she grew to like the boy.

She and Arachne then dressed up as students in Setsuna’s school in order to observe him. Rosiel possessed Kato’s, Setsuna’s classmate’s, body. He attacked Kira, which made Setsuna lose his mind in rage and let Alexiel awaken temporarily. She activated the sword that Kira gave Setsuna as an amulet. Alexiel killed Kato as Kurai rushed to hug her. The three-winged angel purified the human spirit of Rosiel’s control and apologized to Kurai for not being able to finish Rosiel off when she could. Kurai could not understand what she meant by that statement.

Kurai ran after distraught Setsuna. She claimed that she knew exactly what it felt like to be alone. He yelled that she couldn’t care less about him as long as she had Alexiel by her side. She was about to get hit by a car when he saved her by pushing the car away with inhuman strength. He then proceeded to yell at her that she was incapable of fighting heaven if she couldn’t even defend herself. He told her to be a girl and let someone else defend her. She was amazed that he actually noticed that she was female.

Kurai was about to let Kirie kill Sara, but then she decided against it and defended the girl instead. Sara told her that she was leaving for England. Kurai called her a coward for running away. She promised to steal Setsuna from her if she’d leave. Sara gave her a toy ring Setsuna got for her at a fair.

Kurai appeared at Setsuna’s school as he was about to get picked up to be questioned about Kato’s murder. She told him to kidnap his sister and elope, to not care if society condemns them, she told him that if he didn’t go then- he would have regretted it for the rest of his life, and handed the ring to him. She then understood that Alexiel didn’t awaken because she wished to remain human. Arachne came up to the roof to find crying Kurai, who told her that Setsuna was a fool to have been so ready to sacrifice his happiness for the sake of someone else’s. Ironically it was Kurai who was the fool.

Sara died protecting Setsuna, who awakened to Alexiel’s power in the moment of madness and proceeded to destroy the world, claiming everyone guilty. Kurai came to Assiah. Adam Kadamon appeared again and instructed Setsuna to use the sword in order to send his own soul to Hades to find Sara’s spirit. Adam Kadamon returned the world to its state prior to Setsuna’s slip and froze it. If the sword was removed from Setsuna’s body, or if he did not return in a week, he would die.

Boyz (Voice), one of Gehenna’s inhabitants, was in love with Kurai. He kept trying to convince her to forget about Setsuna and start a war without him. Every time Kurai violently rejected the idea. He tried to kill Setsuna’s body, but was discovered before he could. He then fell on the body and removed the sword accidentally, thus killing Setsuna. Belial (Mad Hatter), one of the devils, possessed Noyz (Noise) and offered to become allies with Gehenna. Kurai refused and told Mad Hatter that the devils of Sheol had been looking at destruction of Gehenna and did nothing about it. Mad Hatter gave her flowers and departed, leaving a mark on Noyz’s hand.

Setsuna returned to his original body that was imprisoned in crystal for centuries. Mad Hatter reappeared and informed Setsuna that Raphael would be able to heal his dead body. Belial then told Kurai in secret that there were also methods in hell to resurrect the savior. The only price would be the last princess of Gehenna, Kurai. It was a proposal to marry the Lucifer himself.

The more Setsuna spoke of rescuing Sara- the more jealous Kurai grew. Mad Hatter gave her a Pandora’s box with resurrection elixir. The moment the box was opened it would become a doorway to Sheol. This box became the deal between Kurai and Mad Hatter. Belial gave her a more mature form so she could seduce Setsuna. In his sleep he grabbed Kurai’s hand and said Sara’s name while waking up. She became ashamed of what she did and yelled at him to not look at her. The young princess realized that it wasn’t the kind of love she wanted. Feeling distraught, she told Setsuna that she hated him, but then she came to a conclusion that if she didn’t say the words she wanted to say- she’d never have the opportunity to say them again. Kurai confessed to loving Setsuna and not being bothered by his current state. She didn’t notice how it happened, but she fell in love with him. He told her that he loved her like a sister, or an irreplaceable friend. Kurai laughed and said that she was simply joking. She asked him if he’d choose his own happiness or the happiness of others. Setsuna answered that he’d want everyone to be happy. She smiled and said her farewells while crying.

She walked upon bleeding Kira, whose body came to its limits. Kurai felt overwhelming sadness wash over her as she understood that Kira was simply going to die.

Elixir was a fake and Kurai was found to be missing too late. The vial was broken before the poison could be administered, so the engagement was officially off. Setsuna decided that he had to rescue the princess by going down to Sheol. Noyz offered to come with him, as well as Arachne.

Mad Hatter warned Kurai that if she stepped outside of the room she was confined in she’d most likely be thrown into a different dimension. Kurai threw the earring she stole from Setsuna’s male body into a hole. She wished to forget about him, but in the end she couldn’t let go of the memories, so Kurai fell in after the earring. She landed where a monster, who could kill with a simple look, resided. Kurai remained alive thanks to Setsuna’s earring. Kurai befriended the monster, Prince Abaddon, who was lonely and chained up. She told him of her future marriage in Sheol and he suddenly called her his “Mama”. He hid her away from danger.

Kurai had encountered countess Astarte that made her touch her pregnant belly. Just when Kurai started to trust the woman, Astarte screamed for her to hide in a chest because her brother was coming. Kurai heard the woman’s screams as her unborn child was crushed by her brother, Astaroth. The little demon came out, yelling for him to stop. She didn’t realize that the twins shared a body and switched places. Astaroth wished to show defiance to his lord and informed Kurai that he will tear off her limbs and send them to the Hatter. Before he could carry out his plan Astarte pushed his soul down and took over the body. But the worst evil had the sweetest charms: Astarte couldn’t physically have children. That was why she devoured the girls that she came upon so they wouldn’t run away from her. Prince Abaddon came to her rescue when Astarte turned into a giant snake. He gnawed his own arm off to escape the chain that bound him. Kurai understood Astarte’s loneliness and insane desire for love.

The princess couldn’t leave Sheol, and since the elixir was fake, she had no reason to marry Lucifer. Suddenly she spotted Arachne. Kurai rushed happily towards her cousin, but he knocked her out instead of helping her escape. As the little demon was falling asleep her cousin told her a story of a third prince of Gehenna, who was originally meant to be the Dragon Master. He studied hard to please his father, but as soon as the fourteenth princess was born the king dedicated all his attention to the little girl. The place he was staying at was under attack. It was an assassination attempt on the life of the heir. He heard others speak afterwards that he was only a substitute. His only purpose was to be killed in order to keep the princess safe. This knowledge was hidden even from him. The third prince accepted Belial’s help and remained alive. He traveled to his aunt’s lands and killed his cousin, Arachne, taking his place. The prince got rid of those that could identify him, hid his face with makeup and grew his hair out. He sold the information about Gehenna to angels and the only reason Arachne was happy to see Kurai alive was to gain her trust and become the king.

During the ceremony a gift was given to the demon lord. It was the stuffed body of Alexiel. Horrified by that, Kurai screamed as Prince Abaddon came crashing through the ceiling. She was rescued by Setsuna, who was in disguise while the body was a fake one. In reality the ritual was a sacrifice. The bride of the Lucifer was to be thrown into the pits of hell to keep the structure of it stable. Kurai agreed to do it if Setsuna was released. She told Hatter that he was wrong to hide himtself behind makeup, that he should admit that he wants to be loved.

Arachne stopped Kurai from throwing her life away. He chose to be the sacrifice instead. Mad Hatter let them escape. Prince Abaddon shielded them with his body as Sheol crumbled around them. Kurai made a goal to be strong, to protect those she loved, so that no one would have to spill their blood for her anymore.

Setsuna went off to rescue Sara, who was trapped under Sevothtarthe’s supervision in heaven. He failed. Not only that- a lot of people were sacrificed in the process. Kurai tried to cheer him up, but she couldn’t.
Next time Setsuna, Kira, and Kato went up to heaven together. Kurai provided a dragon for transport. While they were away Kurai’s body started going through changes. She began physically maturing. This weakened her severely. But once they got back they discovered that Rosiel got into hell and killed almost everyone. He stole Alexiel’s body and put the head of a princess on display.

Kira found the real Kurai and Noyz hidden away. The princess could not communicate with Dragons in her state and could not warn the demons of the incoming attack. Rosiel annihilated Kira in front of Setsuna, sliced off one of his wings, and plucked out one of his eyes.

Belial once again proved to be useful as he found the demon princess with Noyz and delivered them safely to Setsuna in heaven. She was training every day while she was with Mad Hatter. Kurai informed Sara that she will be staying by Setsuna’s side and will make sure he will return safely. Sara, who was possessed by Sandalphon, called Kurai a liar and said that she was waiting to steal him at any given moment. Sara threatened Kurai to stay away from Setsuna. The demon princess acknowledged that everything she said was true.

They made their way towards the Tower of God, but Lucifer had already killed the Zodiac angels. The doorway was opened and Setsuna, Kurai, Uriel, and Michael got into the garden of Eden. Kurai and Setsuna got separated from the group when they got sucked into the Tower of God. Katan fell through the ceiling in front of them and the wires from inside him attacked Kurai. Alexiel’s reincarnation cut through them.

Rosiel got to God first. He wished to merge with Alexiel’s body to stay beautiful for eternity. God’s death was announced and Adam Kadamon appeared to take a part of Rosiel’s body that made him insane. Rosiel awakened to destroy the world after he killed Katan. Alexiel awakened to soothe him. She told him that God had kept her from him, that a long time ago she’d promised to kill him before he went insane, but couldn't. Rosiel asked to die and passed his three wings to Setsuna. Uriel cracked the egg open and found the real Adam Kadamon, who instructed them to seal himself with elemental powers in order to cut off the power supply for the God, the Adam Kadamon that wished for world’s end. Since Raphael, the wind angel, and Jibril (Gabriel), the water angel, could not participate, Kurai offered to call out wind and water dragons to take their place.

The real Adam Kadamon took Setsuna to the highest level of heaven to carry out his destiny, while Kurai, Uriel, and Michael started the sealing process. God sent angel embryos to attack them. Kira cut through the feedback cords, stopping him. Kurai, Michael, and Uriel had been thrown out of the tower as soon as Setsuna had cut off god’s head. Adam Kadamon’s last message sounded in the air. He spoke that there were no boundaries, no heaven or hell in this world. Those were created from everyone’s ideals and principles. The demons retreated to hell and the battle had been stopped temporarily. The Assiah’s people awakened to see feathers falling everywhere like snow.

Setsuna lost his wings and became a normal human. Kurai brought him to earth on a dragon. She asked him what he was fighting for if he and Sara were still brother and sister, if they still had to hide their love from everyone. He answered that he did everything to just be together with her and be happy even if no one supported them. Kurai said she’d return to hell and restore her kingdom, as well as grow up to be a gorgeous woman. Setsuna told her that she was always a great girl. She pulled him by the ears into a kiss and he fell off the dragon into Sara’s embrace. Kurai flew away on the dragon to be a better queen for her people.

Personality: Kurai is brash, violent, and outgoing. She speaks rudely to everyone and resorts to kicking shins and stepping on feet in order to get her way. She’s childish and pure. The reason the Dragons chose her as a master was because she had a pure heart, allowing her to see their true forms. She’s a tomboy. When people meet her for the first time they immediately assume she is a boy by the way she refers to herself- a prince. Kurai admires Alexiel as the perfect woman. She put the angel on the pedestal and couldn’t accept Setsuna as equal to that woman. Kurai did her best to please Alexiel, even offering to marry her when the angel said she needed a man to protect her. She’s easily angered, and quick to threaten. Kurai carries her demon heritage with pride. Seeing a large amount of blood brings back bad memories of the slaughter in Gehenna. Kurai is self-sacrificial. She gave up any thought of her own happiness in order to help Setsuna. She sometimes doesn’t notice the hypocrisy of her own words. Kurai claims to hate the morals society pushes on people, yet she became angry when Belial refused to tell her his gender, which was undefined. She also questioned Mad Hatter’s sanity when she found out that he loved Lucifer, yet was looking for a bride for him. Kurai did pretty much the same thing when she made sure that Setsuna and Sara eloped.

Kurai is rather old, but she is naïve. She strongly believes that waging war on humans, angels, and god would change everything and bring peace to the world. She never questions the truths behind Alexiel, Rosiel, and others. She never realized what was truly happening between them, or the real reasons of Alexiel’s rebellion. Kurai is quick to trust people, thus she is used by those such as Mad Hatter and Arachne.

She’s kind and grows on people around her like a spunky little sister. Kurai understands loneliness and pain of losing important people. She sees beyond what others see. Kurai didn’t love Setsuna for his outward appearance that resembled Alexiel’s. She loved his inner qualities and let him go to be happy when the time came.

She is loyal to her people. Kurai decided to be a better queen to the demons in Gehenna. She was exhilarated to find that at least one member of her family remained alive after the slaughter.

She’s a crybaby. Kurai worries about others so much that the waits for them for days and nights. She doesn’t want to be left behind or cause suffering to others. Kurai wants to be strong enough to defend herself and everyone else.
